International support: CDEFI continues the Nadiya programme with the French Embassy in Kiev.

03/03/2025
Since February 2022 and the start of the conflict in Ukraine, the Conference of Deans of French Schools of Engineering (CDEFI) has shown its support for the country’s students, researchers and all university and research institutes’ staff.

In collaboration with the engineering schools for which it is the institutional representative body, CDEFI has mobilised to support and welcome Ukrainian students and researchers.

In spring 2023, the French Embassy in Kiev, in partnership with CDEFI, launched the Nadiya (“hope” in Ukrainian) programme, to maintain links between the academic communities of our two countries in the filed of technology. Following the first call for applications, three Ukrainian researchers were welcomed by as many French engineering schools: Arts et métiers Institute of Technology (Bordeaux campus), Clermont Auvergne INP-SIGMA, and ENSG (University of Lorraine).

This first edition of Nadiya took place in a difficult context due to the conflict and the resulting restrictions on leaving Ukrainian territory. The second edition welcomed nine researchers (four men, five women) in the following schools: ENIB, Arts et Métiers Institute of Technology (Bordeaux Campus), ENIM (Lorraine University), Clermont Auvergne INP-SIGMA, University of Technology of Compiègne, ENGEES and ENSG (Lorraine University). To take into account the complexity of the situation, the French Embassy in Kiev has financed shorter, two-week mobility programmes for four Ukrainian researchers at Ecole Polytechnique. In total, in 2024, thirteen Ukrainian researchers were welcomed in French engineering schools through the Nadiya initiative, highlighting the importance of the project.

CDEFI thanks all the schools that welcomed these Ukrainian scientists. Nadiya illustrates the ability of higher education and research establishments to mobilise in support of academic communities affected by armed conflict. The Conference expresses its gratitude to the diplomatic post in Kiev for its determination to maintain a valuable bilateral cooperation, demonstrating that solidarity and excellence can work together.

More generally, through its participation in the MEnS network and the PAUSE program, CDEFI reaffirms its commitment to protecting scientific, academic and student communities at risk, defending academic freedom and fighting for human rights. We advocate for a bold academic and scientific diplomacy, working to bring the peoples closer together, which is essential to face together the global challenges of our time.
